What Is Fabric GSM and Why Does It Matter?

GSM explained simply — what grams per square metre means, how it affects fabric weight and feel, and how to choose the right GSM for your product.

What Is Fabric GSM and Why Does It Matter?

If you have ever asked a fabric supplier for a quote, you have probably been asked one question first: "What GSM do you need?" Here is what that means and why it matters.

What does GSM mean in fabric?

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It measures the weight of one square metre of fabric. A higher GSM means a heavier, denser fabric; a lower GSM means a lighter, thinner fabric. GSM is one of the most important specifications when ordering fabric because it directly affects feel, durability and cost.

Why does GSM matter?

GSM affects three things buyers care about:

  • Feel and drape — lighter fabrics flow; heavier fabrics feel substantial.
  • Durability — higher GSM generally wears longer for the same construction.
  • Cost — more material per metre usually means a higher price.

What GSM should you choose?

The right GSM depends entirely on your end-use. As a rough guide:

  • Lightweight (lower GSM): summer shirting, linings, light dresswear
  • Mid-weight: everyday apparel, uniforms, casualwear
  • Heavyweight (higher GSM): workwear, upholstery, structured garments

The best approach is to share your end-use with your manufacturer and ask for a sample at the proposed GSM, rather than fixing a number in isolation.

Is higher GSM always better?

No. Higher GSM is not automatically better — it is simply heavier. A breathable summer shirt needs a lower GSM, while a durable work jacket needs a higher one. The "best" GSM is the one that suits your product and your customer.

How is GSM measured?

GSM is measured by cutting a fabric swatch of known area, weighing it, and scaling to one square metre. Reputable manufacturers test GSM as part of routine quality control to keep it consistent across an order.
